Treating a variety of behavioral health symptoms using a multi-modal, holistic approach:
Medication Management
Mood and anxiety disorders, as well as disorders of impulse control such as ADHD, often require a multimodal approach which may include pharmacologic interventions. If initial or ongoing evaluation indicates possible benefit from pharmacologic interventions, a conservative approach is taken. Other beneficial interventions including lifestyle changes are incorporated into the treatment plan.
Personality Disorders & DBT
Personality Disorders are defined as long term patterns of thought and behavior that are unhealthy and inflexible. SBHS specializes in treating adults and adolescents with Borderline Personality Disorder, a disorder characterized by extreme emotional dysregulation. The evidence-based treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder is Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Dialectical Behavior Therapy has shown research efficacy in the treatment of persons with self-harm, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, substance use disorders, PTSD, depression and eating disorders (binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, adjunctive for anorexia).
Depression
Depression is a serious and growing problem among children and adolescents in the US. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in 15-24 year olds. The 2020 pandemic and mitigation efforts have led to an increase in depressive symptoms in youth. Effective therapies include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Existential Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. For moderate to severe depression, pharmacologic interventions may be indicated and substantially improve outcomes for many.
Other Mood Disorders
Mood Disorders may exhibit as severe and persistent bothersome mood fluctuations which negatively affect functioning in at least two domains of life, such as home and school. Mood Disorders can masquerade as other disorders such as Generalized Anxiety or Borderline Personality Disorder. Depending on frequency and severity, effective interventions may include Mindfulness, meditation, yoga, exercise, dietary changes, and sleep interventions. For many, mood stabilizers and Dialectical therapy are effective.
Trauma
Anxiety Disorders
Trauma and PTSD are injuries to the nervous system from traumatic events or experiences. These injuries result in sensitization of the brain and nervous system to reminders of the traumatic event(s). Doctor Seymour specializes in DBT-PE, an evidence based treatment for PTSD symptoms using supported and structured in-vivo and imaginal exposure therapy. The goal of treatment is to decrease frequency and severity of PTSD symptoms.
Anxiety Disorders may include Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Separation Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Specific Phobias. These are among the most common of behavioral disorders in children and adolescents. Effective strategies include Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Mastering Anxiety and Panic for Adolescents (MAP-A) and other exposure based treatments. For acute or intractable anxiety, effective and judicious use of medications may substantially improve outcomes.
ADHD & ODD
ADHD prevalence in the United States is 9.4% in children. Symptoms include difficulty with focus and concentration, impulsivity, distractibility and motor hyperactivity. Regardless of IQ and parental/child efforts, children with ADHD may struggle to reach their potential without intervention. Effective treatments include Behavioral Therapy, Biofeedback, Parenting Strategies and often, stimulant therapy. Other impulse control disorders include Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder which may be amenable to treatment with individual therapy and in some cases, pharmacologic interventions.
